Crossing Malaysia in 7 Days - Day 1

Writer's picture: Mitch MetzgerMitch Metzger

Day 1: Malaysian Trip

Ipoh to Teluk-Intan

103kms

Today was a hard day. My body is getting conditioned again. Hopefully no cramps later. Hot, hot, hot. No rain. Flat so far. Sometimes not much shoulder, sometimes nice.

Had my first flat tire at 18km mark at 0600am. There was two sharp edges on the rim. Can't wait to throw this rim out. I have a new one at home. Just need to change it.

Had some gravel shortcuts. Getting used to the left side of the road driving. It's okay.

Took a nap outside a mosque on their bench. I feel safer here with the "M's" more than in the Philippines.

Most meals are $2-$3 only and I got a good room for $20, except no water till midnight. My bike in designated safe area downstairs in lobby. Not allowed in the room.

An "M" vendor asked me today, "Pray for me. I want to go to America." He offered me to take nap in mosque, but I preferred the bench outside. 🕌

I saw over 30 monkeys today and two huge monitor lizards. That's a new sight. Almost never see monkeys in the Philippines. 🐒🐒🙊🐵🙈🐒🦎🦎

The hotels in Malaysia do not let you bring your bike in the room.

I expect to be stiff tomorrow. I need to average 100kms a day to reach Singapore by the 18th. 🇸🇬🚴‍♂️
